India's $4 Smartphone

There was an article on a $4 Smartphone in India, that really caught my eye. Features it has include; 4-inch display, 1.3-GHz quad-core processor, and 8 GB of storage. This product was priced for $3.65. Now everything about this phone seems perfect from the price to the features but there is one problem, industry insiders say that it is too good to be true. Pankaj Mohindroo, national president of the Indian Cellular association, says that this phone is a joke and is being investigated by government authorities. He also said that when using the cheapest components it would cost at least $40 to produce. When you add in taxes and duties, the phone would cost at least $50.

I chose this story because it seemed like an amazing thing that could never happened. If a $4 smartphone came out, I would be the first in line to buy it. However that is almost impossible and cannot happen especially if government officials say so. It was still very interesting to learn about all the realities of making such a phone, and hopefully it will happen someday.
