A $4 Smartphone : A First-Rate Fake?

India has just released the Freedom 251, a new smartphone that costs that will revolutionize India's market. This is all good and all apart from the fact that the new smartphone costs only 251 rupees, or $3.65 in American dollars. According to a letter sent to India’s Minister of Communication, a smartphone like the Freedom 251, would cost at least 2700 rupees($40) to produce, and an additional 800 rupees($12) for taxes on the phone. This means that the company producing the phone, Ringing Bells, will lose $26 for every phone sold according to Richard Windsor, and analyst at Edison Investment Research. Because of this controversy about this $4 phone, many people consider this a scam, or a joke. But, whether real or fake, this new phone is stirring up a storm of questions for India’s $4 phone.
